The Myth of Discipline
The myth of discipline is a concept taught 15 years ago from the world-renowned coach Charles Poliquin. We would like to expand on this topic and how essential it is for attaining health, fitness, strength, and longevity. Discipline has long been viewed as a cornerstone of personal development, often portrayed as a strict regimen imposed from external sources to shape behavior and achieve goals. However, upon closer review, it becomes apparent that it is not merely a set of rules to be followed, but rather an intrinsic quality that stems from love and must be earned through personal growth and self-awareness.
What Is Discipline?
Discipline, at its core, is rooted in love. It is born out of a deep sense of caring for oneself or others, a desire to cultivate virtues such as perseverance, resilience, and self-control. Without this foundation of love, discipline loses its meaning and purpose; it becomes nothing more than empty adherence to external standards imposed by authority figures. True discipline arises from internal motivation fueled by genuine concern for one’s well-being, or the well-being of those around them.
Moreover, discipline cannot simply be taught or forced upon individuals; it must be earned through conscious effort and practice. While guidance and support from mentors or role models can certainly help facilitate the development of discipline, ultimately it is up to the individual to cultivate this quality within themselves. This process requires self-reflection, determination, and willingness to endure challenges and setbacks along the way.
In today’s fast-paced world filled with distractions and instant gratification, true discipline is becoming increasingly rare. Many people mistake mere compliance with rules or routines for genuine discipline without understanding the depth of commitment and sacrifice required to truly embody this virtue. The path to earning discipline is paved with obstacles that test one’s resolve and character; only through facing these challenges head-on can one emerge stronger and more disciplined.
While discipline may appear unattainable to some individuals, it is important to recognize that it is not a myth but rather a quality that emerges from love and must be earned through dedication and perseverance. By embracing the journey towards self-discipline with an open heart and mind, individuals can unlock their full potential and lead fulfilling lives guided by inner strength and integrity.
