How to Motivate Yourself to Get into the Gym
We’ve all had times where it’s hard to go the gym. Often times we lack the motivation to consistently go. What are some ways we can stay on top of our workouts and keep ourselves motivated?
- Give yourself a reward for going to the gym. Now this doesn’t mean indulging in many sweets, unhealthy drinks, etc. But, maybe it’s getting a healthy smoothie afterwards or watching an episode of your favorite show. Find something tangible that truly allows you to “pat yourself on the back.”
- Make a pledge with your peers. This could be friends, family or your trainer. Accountability often helps people stay motivated. If you can’t find an accountability partner, try enforcing a penalty on yourself. For example, if your goal is to go the gym 3x a week for 1 hour each time, deny yourself of a cheat meal for not doing so.
- Stay positive. Try to visualize the benefits of going to the gym and using it as a motivational strategy. Think about how strength training will help you see muscle development, conditioning to help with weight loss, etc. All of these can help you stay motivated and consistently get into the gym. And, if you’re just feeling tired, come in and simply cut your workout in half. Anything is better than nothing and no one leaves the gym feeling like it was a poor decision to come in.
